Middlemarch in Spring

By Allen Shearer, libretto by Claudia Stevens, based on the novel Middlemarch by George Eliot. Directed by Phil Lowery, set and lighting design by Matthew Antaky. Produced by Composers, Inc. at Z Space in San Francisco, California, March, 2015.

There was a large rear-projection screen at the back of the stage, for which we used the house projector. Two wide-angle 3K-lumen projectors front-projected on scrim panels attached to the set (see full-stage photo below). The large screen showed scenic backdrops, and the scrim screens sometimes showed interior backdrops and sometimes "visions" — something one of the characters was thinking about during a pause in the action.

Jeremy Knight's striking (but not distracting) projections . . . All done, all in. Kudos all around.

A few well-chosen projections by Jeremy Knight provided verdant backdrops for the outdoor scenes and a glimpse — through the artwork of Blake and Goya — into the interior landscapes of some of the characters. (Goya's drawings in particular seemed a horrifyingly apt visual correlative for the emotions of a writer struggling against a deadline.)
