Prospero’s Island

Music by Allen Shearer, libretto by Claudia Stevens, based on Wm. Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” Stage direction and set design by Philip Lowery, conducted by Nathaniel Berman, lighting design by Danielle Ferguson, costume design by Joy Graham Korst. Co-produced by Ninth Planet and InTandem at Herbst Theatre, San Francisco, March, 2023.

My images were presented on a white cyclorama far upstage by two stage-mounted 3500-lumen short-throw projectors, shielded from audience view by flats depicting rocks. Occasionally the projection became part of the action, showing a plane crash in Act I and a helicopter and starling murmuration in Act II. As is other recent productions, I used a computer program to create painterly images from photographic originals.

Stevens’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s play sets the story in the Falkland Islands following World War II. The action takes place during a single day, and the appearance of the landscape and sky changed gradually throught the show.

Jeremy Knight’s projections and director Philip Lowery’s stage designs worked well together, with the projections acting as scenic backdrops.
